HC Deb 01 June 1998 vol 313 cc3-4W
Mr. Levitt

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions (1) if he will support proposals to inform each person who passes the driving test that pedestrians carrying red and white striped canes are both deaf and blind; [42802]

(2) if he will take steps to promote awareness amongst drivers of motor vehicles that a pedestrian carrying a red and white striped cane is both deaf and blind. [42801]

Ms Glenda Jackson

General guidance on consideration for vulnerable road users is published in the Highway Code and driving test manuals. Rule 64 of the Highway Code advises drivers to be aware of blind and partially sighted people. Particular attention is drawn to deafblind people who may be using red and white striped canes.
