HC Deb 01 June 1998 vol 313 c34W
41. Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the hon. Member for Middlesbrough, representing the Church Commissioners, what representations he has received concerning the Government review of charity taxation. [42030]

Mr. Stuart Bell

The Church Commissioners, working with other central bodies of the Church, have made submissions to the Government's ongoing review.

They have in turn received many representations from dioceses, parishes, individual clergy and lay members of the Church, all expressing concern about the effect of advance corporation tax changes and the importance of ensuring that the review is supportive of the charitable status and activities of the Church.

The General Synod of the Church of England has overwhelmingly endorsed a diocesan proposal for a reduction to 5 per cent. VAT on church building repairs.
