To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what estimate he has made of the percentage of harmful vehicle emissions attributable to vehicles over 10 years old; and what percentage of the United Kingdom vehicle fleet such vehicles represent. [54463]

Although my Department regularly estimates emissions from road transport by vehicle type and emission standard, we have no ready-to-hand estimate of the proportion of emissions from vehicles over 10 years old. I will write to the hon. Member as soon as an estimate is available, and a copy of the letter will be placed in the House of Commons Library.

26 per cent. of the United Kingdom vehicles fleet were over 10 years old at the end of 1997.
