§ Mr. SpellarThe Chemical Technology Division has now been absorbed into the chemistry Business Area, which is in the Technology Directorate. Chemical plant continues to be operated for the treatment of radioactive effluents and the recovery of valuable materials from residues and wastes. Such plant is also available to provide adequately pure gases for use in work box atmospheres, where hazardous materials are handled. The purpose of the current chemical technology area includes research and development into a range of materials such as polymers, ceramics and component fabrication using these materials. The work supports research and development and stockpile stewardship of the UK nuclear deterrent.
