HC Deb 31 July 1998 vol 317 c631W
Mr. Luff

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what account he will take of the impact of proposals set out in the Integrated Transport White Paper for reducing car use when considering proposals by county councils to construct new settlements in the countryside; and if he will make a statement. [54458]

Mr. Raynsford

We are in the process of drawing up draft planning guidance on housing and transport and will be considering this issue, among others, as part of that process.

The New Deal for Transport announced that, in updating the guidance on locations for major growth, we will give an increased emphasis on accessibility to jobs, leisure and services by foot, bicycle and public transport, including the promotion of major development in public transport corridors and other areas where good public transport exists or can be provided.
