HC Deb 29 July 1998 vol 317 c274W
Mr. Moss

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what progress is being made in assisting the further development of the Ulster-Scots language. [49982]

Mr. Ingram

In 1997–98 the Ulster-Scots movement received Government funding amounting to some £108,000. The Government also propose to commission independent academic research which will help to determine whether Ulster-Scots should be treated as a language for the purposes of the Council of Europe Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
