To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, pursuant to his oral statement of 14 July 1998,Official Report, column 193, if he will specify the quangos which will be cut, indicating the total sum saved as a consequence. [51460]

Subject to Parliamentary approval, the Government have decided to abolish the following NDPBs: Cardiff Bay Development Corporation; Central Council for Education and Training in Social Work; Rural Development Commission (to merge with Countryside Commission); County Court Rule Committee; Development Board for Rural Wales; English Partnerships (to merge with Commission for New Towns); Funding Agency for Schools; Independent Commission for Police Complaints for Northern Ireland; Land Authority for Wales; Local Government Property Commission (Scotland); National Disability Council; North Hull Housing Action Trust; Residuary Body for Wales; Scottish Water and Sewerage Customers Council; Supreme Court Rule Committee; Tai Cymru (Housing for Wales); Advisory Committee on Service Candidates; Central Adjudication Services; Child Support Appeal Tribunals; Commission for Racial Equality (NI); Crime Prevention Agency Board; Disability Appeal Tribunals; Disability Council (NI); Equal Opportunities Commission (NI); Fair Employment Commission (NI); Firearms Consultative Committee; Health and Safety Agency (NI); Medical Appeals Tribunals; Metropolitan Police Committee; Poisons Board; Social Security Appeal Tribunals; Vaccine Damage Tribunals.

At this point in time, the aggregate level of savings is not known.

In addition to this, the following NDPBs have been abolished since 1 May 1997: Advisory Committee for the Joint Environmental Markets Unit; Advisory Committee on Design Quality in the NHS; Advisory Committee on Plant and Machinery; Agricultural Advisory Panel for Wales; Assessment Panel for Construction Research; Citizen's Charter Panel of Advisers; Deregulation Task Force; Local Government Staff Commission (England); National Advisory Council for the Employment of People with Disabilities; National Council for Vocational Qualifications; Northern Ireland Citizen's Charter Advisory Panel; Race Relations Employment Advisory Group; Regional Panels in MAFF (9); School Curriculum and Assessment Authority; Scottish Economic Council; Scottish Seed Potato Development Corporation; Sheffield Development Corporation; Staff Commission for Wales; Supported Employment Advisory Group; Treasure Trove Reviewing Committee; Ulster Folk and Transport Museum (2) (merged with Ulster Museum); Urban Development Corporations (8); Welsh Council for Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education.

Consultation papers were issued on 24 July proposing streamlining of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport's NDPBs to reduce bureaucracy. Decisions will be made following the consultation.
