To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, pursuant to his answer of 1 June 1998,Official Report, column 152, if he will establish for what reasons British Intelligence did not provide advance warning of the Indian nuclear tests. [46818]

The performance of the intelligence agencies in meeting the requirements placed on them is reviewed regularly by the Joint Intelligence Committee and subsequently by Ministers.
