HC Deb 23 July 1998 vol 316 cc659-60W
Mr. Dorrell

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many schools did not submit results of Key Stage 1 tests for moderation in 1997. [40942]

Ms Estelle Morris

[holding answer 7 July 1998]: 92 maintained mainstream schools did not submit 1997 Key Stage 1 National Curriculum Assessment results. The number of schools not submitting results is falling year on year, and the 1997 figure is less than half that for 1996. The corresponding figures for 1995 and 1996, are 401 and 189 respectively. It is not possible to determine the number of special schools who did not submit results, as it is impossible to differentiate between those schools whose pupils were all disapplied from the National Curriculum Assessments, and therefore had no results to return, and those schools who chose not to return results. Participation by independent schools in the National Curriculum Assessment tests is voluntary and, therefore, they have not been included in this analysis.
