To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his policy on the European Commission's proposal for a Europe-wide withholding tax on cross-border savings. [50517]

Mrs. Liddell

The Government are in favour of international co-operation in effective action against tax evasion. However, we are determined to protect European Community financial markets against damage by provisions which might be ineffective if confined to the Community. We are holding urgent discussions with the financial sector on the likely impact of the current proposals.
