The English Allotments Survey published in 1997 by the National Society of Allotments and Leisure Gardeners Limited and Anglia Polytechnic University and financed by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions provides the following data on allotment numbers:
- 1970—532,964 in England and Wales
- 1977—497,793 in England and Wales
- 1978—479,301 in England and Wales
- 1996—296,923 in England plus an estimated 30,000 allotments in Wales.
