HC Deb 12 January 1998 vol 304 cc86-7W
Mr. Hancock

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what estimate she has made of the extra spending obligations arising from the Prime Minister's policy announced at the Denver Summit in relation to overseas aid; and from what budget extra resources will come. [22470]

Clare Short

My right hon. Friend the Prime Minister announced an increase by 50 per cent. of our bilateral commitments for basic education, health care and clean water in the sub-Saharan Africa. This means my Department will commit at least £360 million over the next three years in these areas compared with £240 million in the previous three. Funds will come from existing resources and will be found by giving higher priority to programmes to combat poverty.
