HC Deb 12 January 1998 vol 304 cc124-5W
Mr. Jenkin

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list for each year since 1978–79 the percentage of Scottish households owning one or more motor cars. [22389]

Mr. McLeish

Information is not available in the form requested. The table shows the percentage of Scottish households which had regular use of cars, for each year since 1978–79 for which such estimates are available. The figure for 1981 is from the Census of Population. The other years' figures were estimated from the results of three sample surveys (the Family Expenditure Survey, the General Household Survey and the National Travel Survey), and are therefore subject to sampling errors. Accordingly, undue weight should not be placed on the figure for any single year, or upon the apparent change between one year and the next.
