HC Deb 12 January 1998 vol 304 c87W
Mr. Hancock

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development how much bilateral aid has been given for(a) health care, (b) education and (c) clean water in Africa in each of the last three years; and what is the estimated level for the next three years. [22468]

Clare Short

Over the last three years we have committed £240 million bilateral aid to health care, education and clean water in Africa and of this we have so far actually spent the following amounts:

£ million
1994–95 1995–96 1996–97
Health care 19.0 35.8 32.6
Education 2.9 21.2 6.7
Water and sanitation 7.2 8.2 12.5

At the G7/8 Denver Summit in June last year my right hon. Friend, the Prime Minister, announced that we would increase by 50 per cent. our commitments on basic education, health care and clean water over the next three years. We intend, therefore, to commit at least £360 million over the next three years to meet these targets.
