To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what are the current annual running costs of the Atomic Weapons Establishments. [21215]

[holding answer 17 December 1997]: The annual running costs of the Atomic Weapons Establishment are of the order of £300 million. As well as research and production, they cover such things as capital investment, site maintenance, decommissioning redundant buildings, equipment and weapons, and waste management.
