§ Mr. WelshTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people applied to Scottish further and higher education institutions for entry in(a) 1996, (b) 1997 and (c) 1998; and how many of these were from (i) Scotland, (ii) England, (iii) Wales, (iv) Northern Ireland, (v) other EU countries and (vi) the rest of the world. [29177]
§ Mr. Wilson[holding answer 12 February I998]: Figures for applicants to non-UCAS Scottish institutions of further and higher education are not held centrally. Figures on applicants for 1997 and 1998 entry to Scottish higher education institutions derived from applications received by UCAS on or before the closing date (15 December 1997 for 1998 entry, and equivalent date for the previous year) are provided in the table. Figures are not available on a consistent basis for 1996 entry.
75WThe small drop between 1997 and 1998 was expected because of the increase in admissions that took place this session when Scottish institutions exceeded their targets, compared with previous shortfalls.
