To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security, pursuant to her answer of 21 January 1998,Official Report, columns 565–66, what are the latest estimates she is collating for labour market participation by lone parents in the United Kingdom; and if she will list the prevailing unemployment rates in each of the counties listed in the years referred to in the answer. [26947]

The latest estimate from the Spring 1997 Labour Force Survey suggests that the labour market participation rate of lone parents in Great Britain is around 44 per cent.

The prevailing unemployment rates in each of the countries listed in the years referred to in the written answer, 21 January 1998, Official Report, columns 565–66 are given in the table.
