HC Deb 17 February 1998 vol 306 cc590-1W
Mr. Truswell

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what assessment he has made of the impact on sport development of the removal of physical education from the core curriculum. [29408]

Mr. Tom Clarke

Physical education has not been removed from the curriculum, it must still be taught by schools. The Government have suspended some detailed requirements as part of our initiative to raise levels of numeracy and literacy in particular, but good PE and sport still has a vital part to play in developing the skills of our young people.
