HC Deb 12 February 1998 vol 306 c329W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the Prime Minister if he will transfer responsibility for the Welsh Consumer Council from the Department of Trade and Industry to the Welsh Office; and if he will make a statement. [28989]

The Prime Minister

I have no plans to transfer responsibility for the Welsh Consumer Council from the Department of Trade and Industry to the Welsh Office.

The position of the Welsh Consumer Council has been considered in the context of the creation of a National Assembly for Wales. The Government's present policy is that the functions of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales will be transferred to the assembly. Consumer protection policy is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry.
