Mr. Clapham

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions how many people were diagnosed as suffering from mesothelioma in(a) 1993, (b) 1994, (c) 1995 and (d) 1996 in each (i) parliamentary constituency and (ii) local authority area. [29235]

Angela Eagle

Data on cancers, including mesothelioma, are collected by regional cancer registries, but the latest complete year for which data are available is 1991. The Health and Safety Executive maintains registers of deaths in Great Britain for which mesothelioma is mentioned on the death certificate. The numbers of mesothelioma deaths in 1993, 1994 and 1995 by local authority are shown in table 1 which has been placed in the Library of the House. Information on mesothelioma deaths is not yet available for 1996 or for parliamentary constituencies.
