Mr. Alan Simpson

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what amount of Brazilian mahogany has been(a) acquired and (b) specified by his Department in (i) 1996 and (ii) 1997; and for what purpose. [28382]

Mrs. Liddell

The Treasury has not acquired any Brazilian mahogany during the periods in question. Nor has it knowingly acquired any goods containing mahogany; or specified Brazilian mahogany in any procurement.

The Treasury's domestic environmental policy states The Department will avoid, wherever possible, the purchase of goods which are manufactured or obtained in such a manner that the resources used to produce those goods is put under threat, e.g. certain hardwoods".
