To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what expenditure has been incurred by his Department, agencies and non-departmental public bodies(a) in 1996–97 and (b) since 1 May 1997 on (i) opinion polling, (ii) focus groups and (iii) other forms of market research; if he will list the surveys commissioned and the purpose of each; and if he will make a statement. Since 1996, the Department of the Environment, the Department of Transport and latterly the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions has commissioned over 100 market research exercises with a value of over £4,000,000. These range from evaluation of attitudes to cycling initiatives, traffic management schemes, eco-labelling schemes, the housing market, environmental issues etc., to customer satisfaction surveys and evaluating of publicity. Details of these projects along with expenditure, have been placed in the House Library.
