Mr. Burstow

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will list the organisations, local authorities and associations he and his ministerial colleagues have(a) met and (b) declined to meet to discuss representations concerning the provisional local government settlement for 1998–99. [27283]

Mr. Raynsford

The table lists those organisations, local authorities and associations which came to see Ministers at the Department during consultation on the provisional local government finance settlement 1998–99. We met delegations from 95 local authorities and one special interest group during the consultation period which ended on 13 January. We then met the Local Government Association and the Association of London Government on 14 January.

We met the special interest group of municipal authorities (SIGOMA) in response to an undertaking I gave in the House, but concluded that there would not be time to meet other similar groups in view of the large number of authorities who had requested a meeting. We did not therefore meet the Major Cities Group of Authorities, the County Councils Network and the Unitary Authorities Group who all asked for meetings within the consultation period.
