To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what proportion of current claimants of severe disablement allowance are women. [64223]

Mr. Timms

The total number of Severe Disablement Allowance (SDA) claimants in Great Britain as at 31 May 1998 is 370,720. Of these 218,740, or 59 per cent. are female.

These figures are taken from a 5 per cent. sample of SDA claimants, taken from the PSCS(INCP) system and excludes a small number of clerical cases.
