To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many of her officials attended conferences (a) in the United Kingdom and (b) overseas; and how many and what percentage made (i) oral and (ii) written contributions to the matters under discussion in the last 12 months for which figures are available. The information for the Northern Ireland Office and the Northern Ireland Departments for 1997 is as follows:

  1. (a) 1,563
  2. (b) 305
    1. (i) 406 (21.7%)
    2. (ii) 229 (12.3%)

Information relating to United Kingdom conferences attended by Department of the Environment Officials is not included as this could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
