HC Deb 08 April 1998 vol 310 c361W
Mr. Rooney

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what progress is being made in implementing the EC directives on working time and young workers. [38770]

Mr. Ian McCartney

I have today issued a consultation document which contains draft regulations to implement the Working Time Directive and the Young Workers Directive as far as it relates to adolescents.

The measures will create protection for workers from being required to work over an average of 48 hours a week; the entitlement to paid annual leave and daily, weekly and in-work rest periods; limits on night working; and special protections for young people.

The consultation period will last until 5 June. We will then consider the responses before drafting any changes to the regulations. A new order will then be laid before Parliament. We aim to have the measures in place by 1 October.
