HC Deb 08 April 1998 vol 310 c294W
Sir Raymond Powell

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions how much contaminated soil has been removed from the Millennium Dome site; to which site it was moved; and what consultations took place prior to its removal. [38126]

Angela Eagle

Around 200,000 tonnes of contaminated soil from the area of the Greenwich Peninsula which is to be leased to the New Millennium Experience Company (NMEC) has been disposed of off-site.

Contaminated soil which cannot be reused on site is disposed of at licensed landfill sites. The contractors employed by English Partnerships operating under a duty of care in the waste handling chain, are responsible for selecting the location of the landfill sites and a number of different sites have been used.

The disposal of soils which cannot be used on-site is part of the overall remediation strategy discussed and approved by both the Environment Agency and the London Borough of Greenwich, and is consistent with Government policy.
