HC Deb 08 April 1998 vol 310 cc286-7W
Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what safety regulations apply to the use of jet skis. [37376]

Ms Glenda Jackson

Jet Ski is a trade name for one of a variety of personal watercraft (PWC). There are no safety regulations which apply to the use of personal watercraft but consideration is being given to the results of consultation on ways in which the safety of such craft and other non-regulated pleasure vessels can be improved. A decision on the way forward will be made in the next few months. At the International Boatshow in January, I helped to launch the Royal Yachting Association's (RYA) Personal Watercraft User Training Initiative. The Scheme aims to encourage more users to undertake training courses run by the RYA and to raise awareness of safety issues.
