§ Mr. Gordon PrenticeTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list, for322W the most recent year for which figures are available, the number of pupils, whose parents/guardians are employed by the diplomatic service, attending private schools at public expense; and if he will list in order of number of pupils attending the schools involved [37944]
§ Mr. Tony LloydThere are at present 610 children of employees of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office attending private schools in the United Kingdom at public expense in order to provide them with continuity of education. A list of the schools in question and the number of pupils attending them follows.
There are 1,005 children resident with staff who are on overseas postings. 166 of these children are in the pre-school age range of three to four years. The remaining 839 are of school age.
Overseas, staff are encouraged where possible to use the State Education System in the country where they are posted. However where there is no suitable state school these children will attend private International schools who charge fees on an annual or termly basis. Since this is a matter of parental choice at post, we are unable to provide a list of the private schools abroad with the numbers of children attending each one without incurring disproportionate cost.
