§ Lord Hyltonasked Her Majesty's Government:
What at present are the financial consequences for a school which expels a pupil; and whether they are planning changes to the current system.
§ Baroness BlackstoneSection 494 of the Education Act 1996 provides that funding for the remainder of the financial year for which a pupil is permanently excluded should follow the pupil to their new school or education provider. The amount transferred is prescribed by regulations.
We indicated in the White Paper Excellence in schools that we would be consulting further on the merits of financial incentives for schools to admit pupils excluded by others. This consultation is planned for early next year.
