HC Deb 12 November 1997 vol 300 cc599-600W
Mr. Matthew Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) if he will list by health authority the number of community hospitals in(a) Cornwall and (b) Devon in each year since 1979 for which figures are available; [15529]

(2) what was the average number of community hospitals per health authority in each year since 1979 for which figures are available; [15530]

(3) how many community hospitals there were in England in each year since 1979 for which figures are available. [15531]

Mr. Boateng

Information about the number of community hospitals in England is not collected in central returns. However the Department of Health is providing a grant to the Community Hospitals Association to update its directory of community hospitals.

Information available from the three health authorities in Devon and Cornwall shows that the total number of community hospitals in each health authority in 1997 is as follows:

  • Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Health Authority: 17
  • North and East Devon Health Authority: 21
  • South and West Devon Health Authority: 12
  • Information on earlier years is not readily available.

Mr. Andrew George

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) what was the total spending on community hospitals in England in each year since 1979 for which figures are available; [15468]

(2) what was the average health authority spending on community hospitals in England in each year since 1979 for which figures are available (a) per hospital and (b) per health authority; [15469]

(3) if he will list by health authority the spending on community hospitals in (a) Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and (b) the three health authorities in Devon in (i) cash terms, (ii) per capita and (iii) 1979 prices in each year since 1979 for which figures are available. [15470]

Mr. Milburn

Financial information is collected on the basis of National Health Service trusts. Information is not therefore available about individual hospitals. Health authorities commission community health services from a wide variety of NHS trusts. Central information about this cannot be disaggregated by NHS trust or individual hospital.

Mr. Breed

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) if he will list by health authority the number of beds in community hospitals in(a) Cornwall and (b) Devon in each year since 1979 for which figures are available; [15526]

(2) if he will list the (a) total and (b) average number of beds in community hospitals in England in each year since 1979 for which figures are available. [15525]

Mr. Boateng

Information on hospital beds is published annually in "Bed Availability for England" copies of which are available in the Library. The information is for National Health Service trusts and is collected by ward type. It is not possible to disaggregate information about community hospitals from the wider NHS trusts information.

Information available from the three health authorities in Devon and Cornwall shows the total number of community hospital beds in each health authority in 1997 is as follows:

  • Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Health Authority: 467
  • North and East Devon Health Authority: 532
  • South and West Devon Health Authority: 344

Information on earlier years is not readily available.
