To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what applications the Government have made for EU funding to inform or persuade the public about the single European currency.[13187]

[holding answer 30 October 1997]: I refer to the answer that I gave to the Member for Grimsby (Mr. Mitchell) on 27 October, Official Report, column 656.

Application for funding is to inform businesses about the implications of the single currency, whether or not we join. It is a condition of the rules governing the EC funds that information measures must not be regarded as propaganda.
