HC Deb 18 March 1997 vol 292 c565W
Mr. Morley

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he plans to support the European Commission's proposals that(a) minimum stunning currents should be laid down by law and (b) the 1993 directive on welfare at slaughter should be amended to require both carotid arteries to be severed at slaughter. [20077]

Mrs. Browning

[holding answer 13 March 1997]: Interested organisations have been asked for their comments on proposals received from the European Commission in respect of directive 93/119/EC on the protection of animals at the time of slaughter or killing. The UK approach to both issues identified by the hon. Member will be carefully considered, taking into account the views expressed by all those consulted.
