To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how much rate support grant the Welsh Office(a) provided to the Vale of Glamorgan in 1996–97 and (b) plans to provide in 1997–98. [20527]

The rate support grant system was replaced in 1990–91 by one that provides central Government support to local authority revenue expenditure by way of revenue support grant and redistributed non-domestic rates. The allocations in respect of the Vale of Glamorgan for the years requested are given in the following table:
