21. Mr. Atkins

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what provisions he proposes to make to improve hospital cancer treatment facilities in Lancashire. [19182]

Mr. Horam

Four Calman cancer units are being developed, at Preston and Chorley; Blackburn and Burnley; Blackpool; and Lancaster, Kendal and Barrow.

A new radiotherapy facility has been built at Preston acute hospitals national health service trust. The radiotherapy unit opened and treated the first patient on 24 February 1997.

The cancer unit at Preston and Chorley will be developed in due course into a Calman cancer centre— over the next five years.
