To ask the President of the Board of Trade when he plans to announce the chairmanship and membership of the Advisory Committee on Chemical Weapons. [19258]

Mr. Anthony Nelson

[holding answer 10 March 1997]: I have appointed Dr. Tom Inch, secretary-general of the Royal Society of Chemistry, to chair the Chemical Weapons Advisory Committee. The appointment will be for an initial period of four years.

The other members of the committee will be selected following consultations with Dr. Inch and an announcement will be made as soon as possible, so that the committee can be in place before the chemical weapons convention enters into force on 29 April 1997.
