To ask the Secretary of State for Health what representations his Department has received about the provision of funding for university medical

imaging and electronic instrumentation research programmes; what assessment it has made of the future viability of such programmes; and if he will make a statement. [18776]

With respect to Department of Health funding under the medical device research programme, six out of the first 12 contracts have been awarded in medical imaging and electronic instrumentation, of which four involve universities. The estimated total cost of the six studies is £1.7 million.
