§ Mr. RichardsTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the effect on income tax levels of raising the revenue currently raised through council tax in Wales by an increase in the basic rate of income tax. [17868]
§ Mr. Jack[holding answer 27 February 1997]: The latest available year for income tax costings for Wales is for 1994–95. Welsh local authorities were budgeted to collect about £340 million of council tax in 1994–95. In order to raise this same level of revenue, the basic rate of tax would need to be increased by nearly 5p in Wales.
