HC Deb 18 June 1997 vol 296 c216W
Mrs. Clwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will publish the findings of the Porton Down research programme into the effect of high pressure water jets on sheep's eyes. [2785]

Mr. Spellar

This is a matter for the Chief Executive of the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency. I have asked the Chief Executive to write to the hon. Member.

Letter from John Chisholm to Mrs. Ann Clwyd, dated 18 June 1997: I am replying to your Question to the Secretary of State for Defence about the findings of the Porton Down research programme into the effect of high pressure water jets on sheep's eyes as this matter falls within my area of responsibility as Chief Executive of the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency. Porton Down are not aware of any research programme to investigate the effect of high pressure water jets on sheep's eyes. Some research work of this type involving another animal species was conducted during the 1970's as I said in my letter to you of 5 February. I am, however, unable to give you any additional information or to release the study report, since it remains classified. I am sorry I cannot be more helpful.
