HC Deb 18 June 1997 vol 296 cc243-4W
Mrs. May

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if the balance of payments statistics for the United Kingdom will continue to be collected via a survey. [3535]

Mrs. Liddell

The information requested falls within the responsibility of the Chief Executive of the Office for National Statistics. I have asked him to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Tim Holt to Mrs. Theresa May, dated 18 June 1997: The Chancellor of the Exchequer has asked me to reply as the Director of the Office for National Statistics to your recent question on whether the balance of payments for the United Kingdom will continue to be collected via a survey. The United Kingdom balance of payments are compiled from a number of different sources including administrative sources and a variety of surveys conducted by the Office for National Statistics and the Bank of England. There are no plans to move away from the use of surveys as a source of data for the United Kingdom balance of payments.
