To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many companies were paid £5 million or more by his Department in 1996. [9405]

Some 172 contractors were paid £5 million or more by the MOD in 1995–96. The 1997 edition of "Defence Statistics" is due to be published on 29 July 1997.

Where chief executives of defence agencies have responsibility for such payments under the terms of their framework documents, I have asked them to write to the hon. Member.

Letter from John Chisholm to Mr. Mike Hancock, dated 28 July 1997: I am replying to your question to the Secretary of State for Defence about companies paid more than £5 million in 1996 as this matter falls within my area of responsibility as Chief Executive of the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA). During the financial year 1996/97, 15 companies were paid £5million or more by DERA, the majority of which were providing utilities and site services. Information for the calendar year 1996 could only be provided at disproportionate cost. I hope this information is helpful.
