§ Mr. SpellarSome 172 contractors were paid £5 million or more by the MOD in 1995–96. The 1997 edition of "Defence Statistics" is due to be published on 29 July 1997.
Where chief executives of defence agencies have responsibility for such payments under the terms of their framework documents, I have asked them to write to the hon. Member.

I am replying to your question to the Secretary of State for Defence about companies paid more than £5 million in 1996 as this matter falls within my area of responsibility as Chief Executive of the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA).73WDuring the financial year 1996/97, 15 companies were paid £5million or more by DERA, the majority of which were providing utilities and site services.
