§ Mr. StreeterTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what were the conclusions of the Denver summit in respect of the control of communicable diseases; and if he will make a statement. [9641]
§ Mr. Tony LloydThe Denver summit agreed to promote more effective co-ordination of international responses to outbreaks of infectious diseases and to develop a global surveillance network working through organisations such as the World Health Organisation. There was also a commitment to accelerate AIDS vaccine research, to enhance international scientific co-operation and collaboration, and to ensure that the United Nations programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) fulfils its mandate.
We welcome the commitment to improve international collaboration on the surveillance, monitoring, and research of communicable diseases. The UK has a strong record in combating communicable diseases, both internationally and at home, and this work will continue in the future.
