To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what has been the percentage change in numbers of NHS nurses(a) in total and (b) in each NHS trust between 1991 and the latest year for which figures are available. [6383]

[holding answer Monday 7 July 1997]: The whole time equivalent number of nurses fell in Scotland by one per cent. between 1991 and 1996.

Information at Trust level is not available for the requested year 1991. A comparison by Trust between 1994 and 1996 is given in the table:
