To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement on his Department's timetable for dealing with the Year 2000 Computer Problem; who is in charge of the project; how many staff are working on it; what is the projected cost of resolving the problem; and whether the project is on schedule. An assessment of the effect of the millennium date change has been undertaken. A central unit is co-ordinating this work; around 25 staff are spending some time working on the various systems throughout the Department.

I do not expect there to be any major costs involved in ensuring that my Department's computer systems can cater for the Year 2000.

The project is on schedule.
