HC Deb 09 July 1997 vol 297 cc479-80W
Mr. Burstow

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many children throughout England and Wales with severe learning disabilities have been excluded from schools on (a) a temporary and (b) a permanent basis (i) at present and (ii) in the last 12 months. [6621]

Ms Estelle Morris

In 1994–95 some 1,800 pupils with statements of special educational need were permanently excluded from schools in England. Details of exclusions in 1995–96 are currently being collated and will be available later in the year. Information of fixed period exclusions is not collected centrally.

Data on exclusions from schools in Wales are matters for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
