HC Deb 13 January 1997 vol 288 cc35-9W
Mr. George Howarth

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the number of prisoners sharing two to a cell designed for one by prison type in each month this year. [9103]

Miss Widdecombe

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from A. J. Pearson to Mr. George Howarth, dated 13 January 1996. The Home Secretary has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your recent Question about the number of prisoners sharing two to a cell designed for one by prison type in each month this year. Data concerning prisoners sharing cells designed for one is only collected for the prison as a whole. It is therefore not possible to provide information by prison type because many prisons have multiple roles. A list of all prisons which have two prisoners sharing cells designed for one and the various roles they undertake, is provided in the attached table.
