To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, pursuant to his answer of 20 November,Official Report, column 570, about the total amount spent by local government, what was the total amount spent by local government in 1979 at current prices. [5902]

Mr. Waldegrave

In the financial year 1979–80 the total amount spent by local government, by national accounts definitions, and adjusted to 1996–97 prices was £68 billion.

As set out in the "Financial Statement and Budget Report 1997–98" (HC 90), total central Government support to local authorities in the United Kingdom in 1995–96, including credit approvals, was £61,815 million; in 1996–97 prices this is equivalent to £63,360 million.
