Mr. Thurnham

To ask the Secretary of State forEducation and Employment what information she has collated on the number of children excluded from(a) primary and (b) secondary schools (i) in the United Kingdom and (ii) in other OECD countries; and if she will make a statement. [17662]

Mr. Forth

The latest figures on exclusion from schools in England relate to the school year 1994–95. These show that 1,365 pupils permanently excluded from primary schools, and 9,197 from secondary schools; a further 522 were excluded from special schools.

Data on exclusions from schools in other parts of the United Kingdom are a matter for my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Scotland and for Wales and my right hon. and learned friend the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. Information on exclusions in other OECD countries is not available.
