§ Mr. FisherMany community programmes have an impact on tourism, or tourism has a role to play in them even though it is not their primary purpose. No figures are therefore available which show the total spending which might have relevance to tourism. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport submitted an Explanatory Memorandum to Parliament on 31 July on European Community Document (COM(97)) 332 Final (also numbered 9712/97): Community Measures Affecting Tourism in 1995–96. The Document highlights some of the main areas of Community activity from which tourism benefits.
§ Mr. FearnTo ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport how much national lottery money has been allocated to tourism-related projects in each of the last three years. [22088]
§ Mr. FisherThe national lottery was established to help support five good causes: sports, arts, heritage, charities and to celebrate the millennium. So far £4.6 billion has been awarded to over 38,000 projects nationwide. While no national lottery funding has therefore been specifically allocated to tourism, many of the funded projects attract tourists to their areas.
