To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will give the total costs broken down by category of maintaining the Falklands garrison in the last year for which figures are available. [21648]

Dr. Reid

The outturn cost to the Ministry of Defence of the Falkland Islands Garrison for financial year 1996–97 was £81 million. This figure comprises £42 million for personnel costs, £22 million for works and property maintenance, £14 million for logistics, movements, administration and headquarters, and £3 million for utilities.
